Floate for reading articles, pdfs and ebooks
Read with a pen in hand.
Taking notes on what you read usually means flipping between two windows and losing your place in both. With Floate, your note floats beside the page, so you can pull out quotes and thoughts while you keep reading.

Notes next to the page
Open an article in Safari, a PDF in Preview or a book in Books, then press ⌘⇧N. Your note stays on top while you scroll, so the page and your thoughts are side by side.
Quotes that keep their shape
Paste a passage from a web page and it keeps its headings, lists and links. Type / and choose Quote for the lines you want to remember.
Think in sketches
Some ideas are easier to draw than to write. Add a canvas to your note and map out an argument, a timeline or the characters in a novel.
A reading library
Keep a folder per book, course or research project. Every note is a file on your Mac, searchable with ⌘K and easy to back up.
How to do it
- Open what you're reading.
- Press ⌘⇧N to open a note beside it.
- Paste quotes and write your thoughts as you read.
- File the note with the rest of your reading notes.
Questions
Does Floate annotate the PDF itself?
No. Floate keeps your notes separately, in a note that floats beside the PDF, so the original file stays untouched.
Can I paste images from what I'm reading?
Yes. Drag in images or paste screenshots and they sit inside your note where you put them.
